SSAS Cross Country/Track

Dear Parents:

I would like to welcome you all to middle school athletics!  Our sport will be a little different from most other teams.  I wanted to clarify a few things regarding the SSA+S Cross Country team.

First, no one will be “cut,” from the team.  All students that are willing to train, both at school and on their own time, will be allowed to participate.  The Cross Country athletes will be held to the same standard as all other athletes at SSA+S: each student must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all their classes, students must not be continual behavior issues during class, and if a student is suspended their eligibility will be reviewed by the Athletic Director.

Our first meet will be on October 13 and we are still trying to determine the location.  The 7 girls and 7 boys that have the best time for our 2.5 mile runs will participate in that meet.  Each month, students will have the opportunity to qualify to run in the meets; it will not always be the same 14 students running, unless they have earned the spot

Due to my personal schedule, practices will be primarily on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.  There will be weeks where we will have practice only two days a week.  Announcements will be made each morning alerting the students as to when practice will be.  Please encourage them to listen to the morning announcements carefully.  The schedule I handed out to the students is an outline for them to follow.  They have been asked to run on their own outside of school.  There are suggestions and descriptions of the types of activities they can be doing to train for our events.

All student athletes must have a physical prior to participation in school events (in our case, prior to the meets).  There is a Sports Packet located on the school website that contains all information you will need.  If your student has already had a physical for this school year, they simply need to bring the paperwork in and you will need to fill out a few more forms giving them permission to participate.

Please encourage your student to eat both breakfast and lunch everyday.  If a student has not eaten lunch on the day of practice, they will not be allowed to participate.  This is for their own health and well-being.  It is imperative that they eat healthy prior to training.

Lastly, please arrive as close to the end of practice as possible to pick up your student.  Practices on Monday and Wednesday will end at 5:30pm; practices on Friday will end at 5:00pm.  I ask that you try to arrive within 15 minutes of the end of practice.  Should your student be picked up later than 15 minutes on three different occasions, they will no longer be allowed to be a part of the team.

This is the second year we have had Cross Country here at SSA+S.  Last year was very successful and I am looking forward to building upon the accomplishments we made last year.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me or call me at school.

Sincerely,
Coach Lizz Curll-Chappell
