The reining division 2A champs are ready to start a new chapter!
This year’s Flag Football season starts in January with tryouts beginning on Tuesday January 12th from 4 – 5:30 PM, facilitated by coach Mapes and coach Lear. Any student interested in trying out will need a completed 20-21 SSAS Athletic Packet turned into Mrs. Pinon prior to tryouts. These can be found at our front desk, on our website, or in the cafeteria. Students cannot tryout without this turned in – no exceptions. In addition to the Athletic Packet, it’s highly recommended that students should also have some type of cleats as this gives a much bigger advantage at tryouts. For the first day of tryouts, student athletes will meet in the SSAS gym afterschool to make sure they have their paperwork turned in. Once all prospects are cleared, we will jog to Pioneer Park (just north of the Publix on 41 near SSAS) where athletes can be picked up at 5:30 PM directly from the park. After the tryouts on January 12th, a group will be invited to the 2nd round of tryouts on Thursday January 14th where the final team will ultimately be determined. Typically around 15 students make the team from all grades. Coach Mapes and coach Lear are looking at all positions on offense and defense so student athletes don’t need to try out for individual positions as the coaches are generally looking for speed and athletic ability first followed closely by catching ability, throwing ability, flag pulling, and defensive coverage skills.
Once the team has been established, practices will run 2-3 times a week, typically at Pioneer Park. Games occur two times a week starting the first week of February with our home field being Redskins Field on 17th street.
Please contact coach Mapes or coach Lear for questions.
